Marine Nature Conservation

With the entry into force of the EU Directive on the Conservation of Natural Habitats and of Wild Fauna and Flora (the Habitats Directive), the EU member states agreed to create a coherent ecological network of protected areas. The protected areas in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the North and Baltic seas are part of that network.

Marine Monitoring

Monitoring refers to systematic long-term observation of species and habitats and is as important in the marine environment as it is on land. Monitoring produces data on the conservation status of habitats and flora and fauna populations, their distribution and abundance, habitat quality, trends and threats. Good marine monitoring can quickly and reliably detect negative trends in marine biodiversity and trigger appropriate action.

Man’s increasing use of the seas does not stop at the boundaries to the German waters of the North and Baltic seas. In some cases, the different types of pressure have far-reaching effects on marine biodiversity. BfN has been tasked with providing detailed position papers on the impact of human activity in the marine environment under the framework of the impact mitigation regulation. It is also committed to minimising marine environment pressures, for example with regard to under-water noise, and to achieving environmentally-compatible, sustainable fisheries.
